Welcome to my blog!

gorillaguitar2.jpg

This weblog is an online journal. If there is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and  talking about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are offering something to the local hard working people and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle" may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently.  I hope my perceptions offer some insight on occasion and  some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates blues.  I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the people I meet. I will be commenting on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as it pertains to style.  I am  human and sometimes speak /write before I think.  I can get into trouble  with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal.  I hope you find some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.

Don't be laboring.
Almost a whole week and I have not posted and it seems like a month.
Well, it has not been for a lack of trying that I have been missing either the motivation or the time and opportunity to write some blues or other cathartic news.
My weeknight travels brought me to Lefty's and Brightwaters Inn again and they were typically good nights of music.
Lefty's has been getting busy with a funk and soul collaboration of players. Hosting last week was Papa G and Tim Dorsey along with Tommy Pizza. Joining them was a fine harp player, drummer Henning Stumm and also the rest of the men from O'Zone making it a fine mix of jammers. I'm enjoying having that one to bounce in and out of for some close-to-home variety.
Brightwaters Inn is still bringing a fun mix every week too and a great night of music. There are horns and always good guitars, keys, drums and harps.  I am grateful that the jam nights have become so popular and the players seem to be enjoying it as much as we patrons and fans. In fact the weeknight events (including the line-ups at Mirelle's) have become as good as the weekend nights of music.
Last night for instance, a holiday weekend Saturday night, I got out about 10 and I felt like I was looking a cheap apartment in Manhattan. I know there were shows earlier in Freeport and Patchogue but for a Saturday night I expected more stuff later on. It ended up being a few stops at some non blues events and then winding up at Brightwaters Inn listening to the splendor of Wally's iPod. The man knows his blues and he has the best iPod in the east and there were some fun people there but it ain't live music.
Thank God for my friends and for an afternoon party on Labor Day weekend.  Ms. Coolness (Audrey C) had her 3rd annual backyard bash and it was the highlight of my otherwise mundane weekend so far.
If you would like to host an event I think my tall dark and cool friend has it down to an art. Being a caterer she offered an orgy of food and drink and being a blues fan like myself she had as good a collection of players one can ask for. Josh Allen, Ralph Santiago and Paul on bass were lead men with all kinds of chaps joining in like Jim Kolman, Arty Panico, Papa G, Bruce Dickson, Johnny Anderson, Johnny Cola, Steve Scalfani, Charlie (guitar) and the funky and amazing Chrispy Chicken on sax. Yikes does he make music or whathefu..?! Once again he exuded magical happiness with his chrispy sax. Is there a CD I can get of that guy?
Another fun aspect of an Audrey C party is the cool people one meets. I always enjoy the company of the friends of music, Elaine, Nancy, Kathy B, Lori, Dawn, etc and I also had the honor of meeting James and Leah of MIEVO (The Fan Network. See the link here.). If you have not checked out the network they created of musicians and artists you MUST. It's amazing! They happened to be really nice folks and I'm pretty sure they have created a monster network Go, see, join, create.
So the weekend ain't over and I'm going to take one more shot. There are some good events on the calendar so it is up to me to get there. I suggest you do the same.
Thanks for checking in and go support some live music. Please.

Searching...
It was Saturday night. I had been at a daytime party, a good one, and I had time afterwards for a little nap which I needed. My vunderchild was taken care of and I was good to go again around 10:30.
I have been jonesing for something to touch my soul for a while now. Life has been stressful, money has been a hard story, family issues get even harder.
The perception from media and conventional chit chat is that everything is always well with people and no one really struggles with anything. Well I do and I like to tear myself away as often as possible and find ways to say "ahhh" and to get back to feeling like I have something in common with people. I get that from music. Artists share that stuff in their music and I am there to hear it. I get the better feeling that I am not alone.
I had a few local choices. Blue Stone was at Mustang Sally's which is real close and there was a funk group at Da Funky Phish, Nappyhead who has not been around in a long time and I remember them being good.
So first I caught a set at Mustang Sally's. The place is large and as usual not full...at least for the sporadic music events they have hosted there of late. Blue Stone has some good pieces, a good keyboard player, the guitar had some good moments and the rhythm section was able. It was standard fare though at least for the set of songs I heard. They played a pretty good mix with Steely Dan and some traditional blues tunes but I didn't get the feeling I was looking for. I guess I was more needy than them that night. Other times I can enjoy just a couple of well done tunes.
I got the call that my buddy was at Da Phish so off I went looking for my fix. Nappyhead was putting on their show. It is a George Clinton type show with a big cast of funk players (the Nappyhead army) and it is a driving beat and multi-voice, gutteral vocal. They wear whimsical and seemingly absurd costumes with big fuzzy hats, paisley robes, boas and even men in diapers but they are props and serve a purpose. It is a trip on the mothership and a high altitude experience. It offers escape and an intoxicating beat and often a cloud of smoke although that was missing in this case. It might have been the only thing missing. Nappyhead brings the real experience and while I may not have found my soulful connection that night I did find a musical escape and I was reminded that I can appreciate the soul in the funk and how it is deeper then may appear with all the animation. I had some fun and that was a different way of getting what I needed out of music.
I heard it was just a reunion gig for Nappyhead. It seemed to go well. I hope they book again soon. I will be sure to keep you posted if they do.
Thanks for hanging this time. I will be back in a day or so with a new calendar so ya'll come back.

Decompression blues.
I know life gets busy for everyone at times especially here on Long Island where the cost of living is beyond the means of many middle class suburbanites but can we get more moments of peace and reflection?
I had only my Wednesday night to de-stress this week as even Friday night was occupied with non-blues affairs and even the usually mellow, often psychadelic Wednesday night had it's irksome moments.
What is supposed to be a night of listening to music took on a more frantic feel as the crowd was sort of large (that's a good thing), the mix was eclectic(also good) and there were faces not seen in a while at the Brightwaters Inn jam. All that made for a lot of personal stuff and drama and not enough time to listen to music. I am glad everyone had fun and they seem to, but chit chat and smoke breaks ( I quit cigs  8 years ago and I still get dragged outside. Okay there's a little more to that story) are distracting when I need my decompression! Nothing personal. It is nice to be with friends but I am torn sometimes between wanting music and enjoying friends.
Thank god there was some memorable music. Pete Tursi belted out some trumpet riffs in a Stormy Monday jam (along with Sweet Suzi on some soulful notes) and Pete T and Grace of the same last name did a couple of nice horn duets. There was also Johnny Anderson making some beautiful music on guitar and Arty the Professor Panico lighting up some tunes also on guitar of course.  Ray Ray Wade has been expressing himself more forcefully of late. It is getting good there at the ole' BI. There was so much other stuff going on and I missed much of it. That was just the stuff I caught.
There was a good night at DJ Riders on Thursday I heard. That jam had Chrispy Chicken with his sax and it may go on for a few more Thursdays like that I hear. I am trying to figure out how I can make another night possible with all the busy-ness going on right now. The more I need the escape the harder it is to get. That is one of those ironies in life. It seems cruel.
Anyway, the weekend is still here and I'm going out for something tonight. I suggest you do the same and we'll all meet here tomorrow and compare notes. Okay? Great.
   Thanks for stopping by... always.

Big musical weekend!
My very long weekend started Friday night at Giacomo Jacks with O'Zone.
This time it was a funky scene rather than a blues scene. The place always has a happy face even when the music is called blues, yet, I happened to meet a lovely lady named Babs who scrunched her face when I said I write a blog about blues as if it is a sad subject. I think we have to change that impression and it will have to be one housewife at a time. Work, work, work.
So O'Zone has added a player, Julio, another keyboard player and vocalist. He adds a lot. The funk boys have kicked it up a notch and it was a fun night. Now with two keyboard players (Julio joins Tim Dorsey) and at least three vocalists. O'Zone offers a number of personalities not the least of which is Ahmed on lead guitar with a smooth sound both vocally and on guitar. If you like a night of upbeat funk/ R&B/soul this is becoming a fun bunch.
Saturday I decided to show my face again at Giacomo Jacks for 16 Tons. I knew I would be having a busy weekend with a Sunday event so I tried to keep it local and sane.
16 Tons offers some more down home blues...as in mountain, country sounding style. They did a Johnny Cash number for one and they have a few nice players and vocals. I like the variety around here and I liked their laid back stylings.
It was also interesting to see the place two nights in a row. I got to see who the regulars are (I imagine they said the same of me) and I enjoyed the change of faces although both bar crews are nice. Giacomo Jacks has just the right attitude for blues and local live music. They enjoy it as much as the patrons and they are gracious hosts.
So Sunday was a big day. I got to attend a whole day of blues at The Brickhouse in Patchogue for the LIBS competition. That was not easy to pull off so I made the best of it and stayed for the jam afterwards with Josey Wales and co.
The day of musical competition started with Outshine who were a tight band with some good vocals and fancy guitar. They, like all, played some cover and original and I enjoyed the set. I hope we get to see them around here more.
Next up was Joe Rock. It was the Joe Rock from radio fame and he got up there and did a solo set (covers) with an electric guitar and a mic. I was impressed with his confidence and showmanship although the competition was more about originality. The man has a set of another kind, though and I would llike to see more acts like that...just a musician with a mic. It offers more of an opportunity for a real soul-letting as opposed to a band or partner act which adds other voices.
Joseph's Blues Box followed and they put out a really nice effort and a good couple of songs. That was more of the blues band, Long Island style and they had good lead vocals and good pieces playing behind him. I have seen JBB before and they have done some nice fine-tuning on their stuff.
The Reinharts were next and I was looking forward to the acoustic duo as I had seen them a few weeks before at Blue Parrot and I liked the show then. This time was a very similar set and the two unassuming and sincere players had lots of originality and some nice slide acoustic guitar playing with some good song writing. They are such a humble presence that they kind of warmed my heart. I like what they do and I look forward to watching them do more. I hope it is around here.
Next came the only diva in the show this year (and the eventual winner!); Sweet Suzi. Suzi was up there with the regular cast but this time her 6-string was Gary Sellers (as he was for the weeks prior). They were a pretty powerful act. Suzi had something to say and she said it nicely. Her delivery was rich, emotional and contained.
Gary Sellers playing is a voice unto itself and cannot be dismissed. The two of them with the BE ryhthm section should be enjoyable both in Memphis and wherever else they play. Theirs was a knockout set.
Motu was the next blues act and the eventual winner of the solo/duo act. The man reeks blues and he had me feelin it. By the third song I was halfway to Mississippi. He sat and played and brought his soul out for the show. His is a blues style from the heart.
Lonseome Dan and the Crumudgeons were last and not least. I love the name, I love the sounds and they were a unique group with varying strings, good vocals and originality and personality. Perhaps they will be a contender in coming years as they may have lacked a bit of the cohesion of the winning act. They are a fun band though and I will see them again if they play around here.
It was a really enjoyable day for me at Brickhouse. I love few things more than hearing a line-up of talented bands and players giving it up in a setting that means something. It brings out more of the angst that makes art happen...at least for me.
Enjoy your music and thanks for checking in.

Chill time.
The week passed and I never mentioned my Wednesday night adventures. I am suffering from a post vacation mind lag. Coffee just isn't enough to get me going... and I missed posting about my fun midweek adventures.
Of late I have been starting at Lefty's because it is close and there has been a jam growing with some funk players. This week I got a few surprises as Giovanni Von Essen is back in town from her world travels and some of the Wed. night Lefty's boys were her old mates with a band called Juice. They were cool.
So Wednesday night I got a blast of the past as Gio, Papa G, Henning Stumm and Tim Dorsey (missing only Shenole Latimer) performed some of the magic that was called Juice. It was gorgeous. I felt lucky to be there for that little episode as they performed their original, Taxi and a few other Gio numbers from her new CD, Essentially Me.
The other surprise was Steve Interrante who came in all casual and stuff from a Venetian Beach Hut gig. That was fun too as Mr. NachoMama-70'sBand got up and blew some funkjazzbop stuff. All this on a Wednesday night.
After a good long set-and-a-half there I headed to Brightwaters Inn where I was meeting some friends for the blues jam and it was also happening there.
I came in the back door to see Pete Tursi and Grace of the same last name with horns up and blowing. It kept up pretty good under the substitute mc work of Josh Allen and Derek Hensley until I was stalled by a phonecall. I needed to pick up the Ms. far away in the dark of night. Car trouble! Bummer.  At least I took in enough live action to make it noteworthy.
So, the weekend is here, thank-you-very-much and I consider it my duty, here, to inform and motivate you to get out and recreate. I know not everyone can do the weeknight thing although I don't think many of you are trying. It only hurts one morning a week and that's what coffee is for.
There is music and lots of it in these enviorns. I post a calendar so I know there's lots of stuff and I think there's a good menu this weekend.
At the risk of casting a shadow over anyone I'd like to mention a few of the potential highlights. It sometimes turns out that the highlights were not and one of the less obvious events turns out to have all the magic so don't change your plans if you chose a favorite and had plans already.
I have seen Todd Wolfe at a few of the festivals and he happens to be a rather cool guitar player and entertainer. Mr.Wolfe is at Mirelle's (Post Ave., Westbury) tonight. That's a good one. There are Killer Joe sightings this weekend, Soul Be It is awesome, Cadillac Moon (Friday) sounds like fun and Nacho Mama is some quality stuff. Gail Storm has been rockin. Sweet Suzi has a gig.  These are just some of the many possibly magical happenings. Not to mention the blues competition on Sunday!
Friday after work is a good time in the summer. It is late for a posting of those events, I know, but some good names play the TGIF events and the beach shows are a nice time... so is the Live at Five at Brickhouse on Fridays. Josey Wales is setting up right now and he may get a diva to show up. He does that from time to time.
If I missed any shows on my calendar please feel free to let me know (bill@billfoolery.com). Otherwise get out there and have some fun. It's Friday, this is summer and we all work too damn hard.
Thanks for checking in.

A wild week.
Very infrequently do I get to wear a tasteless shirt, sleep late and do nothing all day for anyone besides my family and myself. That was my three day summer trip and I dug it. Thanks to my friends (thanks Raymondo)who have one of those idyllic houses on a lake in the mountains. The weather sucked for the most part but the boat did make runs on the lake, twice, the kids did get to jump off a small cliff into running water and I hunted in the woods (and elsewhere) for wild life.
Just for the record, I found some wild life...and I am mostly referring to a fungi resembling a small Dr. Seussian tree cluster. One day soon you will see a picture of that surreal life form somewhere on my modest site and you will agree that I had one wild weekend in the woods. Truth be told my camera had a bad reaction (to the fungus ?) and is recovering from something disturbing.
Wildness aside, I have little to report blues-wise for the weekend past but stay tuned...
The coming weekend has a fine roster of blues and other "over 30" live music and the coming weekend also has the competition for a spot in the International Blues Competition in Memphis...hosted at the Brickhouse Brewery on Sunday. There are interesting stories and potentially exciting futures for those involved. It should be fun.
I did get to a rock show last Friday night. I stopped in at Blue Parrot in Massapequa for a quick belt and I caught some of  Samepaige. That's a new name here on billf.... but they did some melodious rocking in the R&B and soul mode with good rock vocals... so there's some non-blue rock for ya'll.
Thanks for checking in and get out there and hear some live music. We have fertile soil for some funky and wild life forms.

Some summer magic.
I feel wary when I don't get out for music often enough. I feel in danger of losing my connections to music, my remedy.
I get busy with life and I may miss one of my few nights out or I may just get too busy to sit and listen. Either work takes me to bedtime or my mind gets monopolized by something. A few days goes by and I feel something missing. I miss my relationship with the emotion in the music they have created. It is more apparent when my strings are pulled more than usual.
I had fond relatives visiting from Australia. They stayed with us this week. Their five with our three in our humble house...with a cat. It was a rich experience for my daughter who spent time with her first cousin, same age and gender, for the first time and it was rich for the rest of us.
My family from down under has an autistic child and it was heart wrenching spending a few days living with my adorable and silent nine year old nephew. He tried my patience a little but I am okay with how I did. I tried to give my brother-in-law and his wife a little break when Mitchell came downstairs alone one morning. He bounced around the kitchen as I tried to prepare breakfast for everyone. The boy demands full attention except for occasional moments when he sits catatonically and then he is up again picking up things he should not be touching. I spent about an hour with him alone then. I briefly felt the burden, and the affection, the family feels and I was moved by their charity and happy attitudes.
After a short week of that joy, revelation and sorrow I came to miss my music. I needed it to share my joy and pain and sort of cry inside...with someone.
So Wednesday came. My night out never seemed so precious.
I started out in Lindenhurst where I heard Giovanni VonEssen may be singing. She is in town and it would have been perfect to hear her sing a few songs at the Lefty's jam. It was not to be (Gio's busy schedule of music, family and traveling caught up with her I heard) but there was a good turnout and I enjoyed the jam by the members of O'Zone and some others.
After a few belts and some jazzy funk I was text'd by another visitor from afar. In this case a visiting buddy from Vegas summoned me to another jam near where he was staying...so I migrated to Brightwaters Inn for the blues jam.
Again, there was a good turnout and some good guitars are always heard there and they were playing some blues. This time I got to sit and listen and hang out. I got to take in some musical moments and I felt the vibe...as it were. All things fell back into rhythm and I felt better.
Thanks again all you musicians and venues. I got my little fix.
The weekend approaches and I get to take my one and only trip for the summer. I will be upstate for a few days, by a lake, with my daughter and I'll have my iPod and my new iPod player and friends. It all feels good right now. I hope you can say the same. Thanks for stopping by.

Music, blues joints and Hot wings.
I had a weekend of "firsts" and it was a diverse set of experiences.
Friday night I visited Blue for the first time. Once again I got a real late start and it was a late-ish show with That 70's Band and it was close enough to catch a good set or two.
If you haven't checked out Blue it might come as a surprise after going to blues clubs every week. The place is gorgeous and so was the crowd. There was a big turnout, dressed to the nines and they were there to dance. It had a different feel than a blues show.
That 70's Band was not doing blues even though they sport a few R&B performers and some players that play blues like Steve Interrante and JD Leonard. The cast is big with all good pieces including two lead vocalists, in this case Stephen Moore and Suzanne O'Conner. The songs are dance fare and R&B and the voices and instrumentals are solid. There were good sax riffs, some good guitar and the vocals were professional. All good. The people there were digging the dancing. I was loving the performances all around.
That 70's Band is a good show and Blue is a classy joint. Check out both, often.
I really got lucky this weekend...musically speaking, and made it out two nights.
Saturday I noticed the Reinharts were at Blue Parrot in Massapequa. I never saw the duo and they are entered in the competition for LI Blues representative in the Internatioonal Blues competition in a few weeks.
I arrived and found parking way to easy. That wasn't a good sign but it was early and it's not about the crowd. It's about the music.
Sure enough there were seats at the bar so I grabbed some prime real estate and caught the beginning of the beginning.
They are two youngish guys with acoustic guitars. One with a slide. They were very well rehearsed in fact it sounded like original stuff and the two of them made it together. Just a guess.
It ain't easy sounding good in that situation. I like a room with people to watch and gather feedback from and I like to see the band getting some love and that propels the music on to better places...usually. So the two of them just up there playing to a cold room was stark. All the more interesting. I look forward to more.
So the Reinharts may be new, they may not be from around here, they may be studio guys. I don't know but they made some good music and actually there were more people there when I left so maybe a late arriving crowd got a different look. In any case I was off to Sparky's.
Kerry Kearney was booked at the new Texas style eatery and recent home to quality blues. I also heard that guest bass player was Papa G. That was my third "first".
I have seen and heard KK a good number of times and I always loved the group...all of them including Frank Celenza on bass. This was unusual especially for a funk/jazz guy to be filling in. It was fun and Kerry Kearney was a joy to hear as always.
Actually I have another first to share. I tried the chicken wings at Sparky's for the first time. Damn! Those were some fine and juicy wings and not for the meek. I took some home and couldn't stop scarfing those hot little mofo's.
How was your weekend? There were some good shows and I'd love to hear about the ones I missed... feel free to pass on some tidbits all you blues fans.
I also got to hear some of the new C&B cd and it's a good one! More to come on that and some other new cd's from the local talent. Sweet Suzi's is still new and I've only played a few of those here. Stay tuned,  and Fourteen Feet also have a new and exciting cd. I look forward to hearing that one.
Thanks again for checking in and for the help with schedules. I appreciate all the gig info I can get. Have a good week of music.

Weeknight blues news.
After missing some good moments at the new Brightwaters jam in recent weeks I figured I'd finally get there for the first act.
I arrived a little after ten, got me a dirty vodka, sat down and realized it was only a little after ten. I had a long way to go.
Normally I wander off to another jam first like Lefty's or St. James or Patchogue or Reflections and I land at the Brightwaters Inn or someplace close for one one more set or two. I have only a crawl to go home from there so I can top off my attitude in a safe and responsible manner... of course.
The BI jam again featured some horns early on. Mr. Pete Tursi handled the trumpet quite well and belted out a few numbers followed by Joe Behar with some more brass and then some Grace Tursi sax which had some sweetness. The addition of brass lends drama to the music. Always welcome.
There were some moments later on with the Blue Matter boys in their extended family mode (w/ Charlie Labs on keys, and Wally on harp) when I would have loved some ass kickin horn but that was too late for horns. After midnight they seem to disappear. Pumpkin horns.
Anyway, there were some good moments. Arty Panico made some magic with Haynes' Soulshine. He did a sort of treble riff that lit up a little. It was a cool finger dance and a well done song.
There weren't any of the dramatic vocalists this week but it was a pretty good turnout and a fine Wednesday night's entertainment. Mr. Phil, BBopDlux was on hand to take in some jamin. That was a nice surprise. That Bluesbrat, Ms. Kathy, sure knows a lot of folks.
I read and hear lots of people out there but with my limited time I don't get to meet as many as I'd like. Phil moderates the Yahoo Group, Ventilations. It's an interesting conversation he carries on. It was fun to have a little chat with Mr. BBop. He's a frank man and, like his group-talk, substantive. That's so appreciated. Interesting guy!
So the blues carries on and there's some news. Sweet Suzi is getting play in XM Radio. Pam Betti has a song in a new movie soundtrack, Betti's Blues in The Dysfunctional Book Club, opening this week. C&B have a hot CD coming out and the party is this weekend. Sam Taylor has an autobiography coming out. The LI blues competition is coming up (Aug. 17 @ Brickhouse).
Check out these hard working and talented people and thanks for checking in here.
